What Jeffrey Kerr has been reading recently.

BOYNE (JOHN) Noah Barleywater Runs Away (£10.99)

From the author of 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas', this is another wonderful book that will surely be read by more adults than children. Noah sets off from home early one morning to explore the world leaving his troubles behind him. He soon finds an extraordinary toyshop and a most unusual man, who takes Noah on an extraordinary journey. This a beautifully crafted book in which the story reveals itself slowly and subtly, without great show. It takes you on a journey back to childhood and on to old age, but leaves you contented.

CONRAN (JASPER) Country (£45)

Many of you will have seen this book on my e-mail signature for several months. It remained there for so long as it continues to give pleasure every time I open it. The stunning images and the text give a vision of the British countryside that is not only beautiful and timeless but somehow re-assuring. Jasper Conran is a man of great taste and this, the first book in a new series, demonstrates his great passion for the countryside, the people who maintain its ancient traditions and its beauty.

FOREMAN (AMANDA). A World on Fire: (Penguin£30)

A gripping, fast moving account of the American Civil War. Amanda Foreman looks at the involvement of British subjects, from the Minister Plenipotentiary in Washington to the soldiers of fortune who fought on both sides. Without lessening the horrors of a war which saw casualties on an entirely new scale (almost twice those of the Crimean War), Amanda Foreman has skillfully introduced suspense into the historical narrative. A book to devour - I couldn't put this one down.

MITFORD (NANCY) Wigs on the Green (Penguin£8.99)

Nancy Mitford’s third, and undoubtedly her most contentious novel, ‘Wigs on the Green’ has been out of print for nearly seventy-five years, since the first edition 1935. It tells the story of two fortune hunters, Noel and Jasper, who travel down to the country in search of an heiress. On arrival they meet the quite extraordinary figure of Eugenia Malmains, an ardent supporter of Captain Jack and the Union Jackshirts, and the adventure begins with an ever-growing cast of wonderfully eccentric Mitford characters.

MOFFAT (WENDY) A Great Unrecorded History: A New Life of E.M. Forster (£25)

Mary Moffat, the first biographer to have full access to all of the author's letters and diaries, traces the themes central Forster's novel 'Maurice' through his life: a desire for sexual freedom and a yearning for a classless society. In so doing she has produced not only an interesting, well-written, and enjoyable biography, but one which demonstrates her love and affection for her subject and which will undoubtedly encourage many to pick up one or all of Forster’s works.

WASHBURN (LAURA). Home-Cooked Comforts: (£16.99)

Laura Washburn has managed to pull together in one book the ultimate collection of comfort food receipts. Simple, uncomplicated, yet utterly delicious food, that makes one yearn for the coming of winter and the warmth of an AGA in your kitchen.

YEOWARD (WM.) William Yeoward at Home: (£25)

With several gorgeous books to his name allready, this is the first time that the reknowned international designer has devoted his attention to his own interiors. The result is a fabulous glimpse into his town and country homes. With stunning photographs of rooms rich in colour and comfort, yet with a modern feel, this is a book to inspire and to enjoy.
