The magnificent country seat of William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire (1698 - 1755). The gardens and parkland were at this time planted in the rigid, formal style which Lancelot (Capability) Brown was later commissioned to replace with the natural, romantic look which he had helped to bring into fashion.
