Double-page street map with original colour by hand, engraved by Benjamin Rees Davies. With vignette of the Piazza San Marco to upper left and additional Environs of Venice map within a scroll cartouche upper right. Elevations of the city’s principal buildings, illustrating scale, feature in uncoloured outline close to the lower margin.
Full sheet 410 x 640 mm, 16 x 25¼ ins, mounted. Very minor toning and finger soiling; a fine example of this informative and attractive map.
The SDUK (Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge) nurtured the Victorian public's drive for self-education and improvement. The present map was included in their 1844 collected two-volume work ‘Maps of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge’.
