Every day at least 20,000 people visit the Sistine Chapel. These volumes recreate and preserve its remarkable artistry, in the peace and comfort of your home. 

The Chapel features twelve panels, six on each wall, comprising the middle section. On the higher strip of the two walls are false niches with 28 full length images of the popes. 

Aside from the iconic frescoes by Michelangelo, the room includes works by other renowned Renaissance artists, including Pietro Perugino, Dominico Ghirlandaio, and Sandro Botticelli. Some images are well known – the Creation of Man and the Original Sin, for example – but others are lesser known such as the sibyls, the prophets and other episodes of the Old and New Testament.

The Vatican Museum and the esteemed Italian art publisher Scripta Maneant have joined forces to produce this extraordinary three-volume photographic record of the Sistine Chapel. 

Using the latest photographic technology, more than 270,000 images were shot by a team of photographers over the course of 65 nights, working while the Vatican is closed from 7pm until 2am. The photo shoot involved thousands of frames, each one comparable in size to a mosaic tile, taken on raised platforms up to ten metres high. 

The results have been stitched together electronically to reveal the frescoes by Michelangelo and other masters in unprecedented colour and detail.
