The Cathedral Complex

The ancient frescoes of the Cathedral are available in their full, awe-inspiring detail for the first time. 

The first stone of the Cathedral was placed on 8 September 1296, and finished construction on 25 March 1436. The façade is now a 19th-century neo-Gothic masterpiece. The exterior is covered in white, red and green marble, with four large portals adorned with sculptures, and there are 44 fourteenth century stained-glass windows.  

The art that decorates the dome is Giorgio Vasari’s master work, after his death completed by Federico Zuccari. Concentric rings of humans and angels lead upwards towards Christ and the heavens, as well as down towards a ring of fiery damnation.

These volumes bring every face to life, allowing you to glimpse the intricate expressions and gestures that Vasari chose to represent the Apocalypse.

The first volume of this sumptuous publication reveals every hard to perceive inch of the Dome’s decoration in eye-popping 1:1 scale.

A new, exclusive Scripta Maneant photographic campaign that reveals every hidden side of the corpus of frescoes in the Dome and provides a previously unseen and complete view.

The photographs are by BAMSphoto, a studio who specialise in preserving artistic heritage. They use artificial lighting systems that mimic the natural light of the Dome, as well as special pneumatic telescopic poles up to 17 meters high to provide an unprecedented level of detail. This brings the wonder of the Dome into easy reach. 

The photos are accompanied by insightful context from: Marco Bussagli, Art historian and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome; Mina Gregori, Professor Emeritus of Modern Art History at the University of Florence; and Timothy Verdon, director of the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Florence.
