Author: Leslie Gerry, Edith Wharton
Publisher: Leslie Gerry
About the Book:
Marrakesh, a collection of 30 paintings in which Leslie Gerry attempts to capture and record that magnetic and intoxicating ‘red’ city on the edge of the Sahara Desert, after a trip of discovery in October 2019. The text comprises of extracts from In Morocco by Edith Wharton, published in 1920. One of the major figures in American literary history, she gives a colourful and textured travel memoir, exploring the culture, history, and beauty of a Morocco of old.
About the Artist:
Leslie Gerry's principal medium is the artist's book, from which he also produces limited edition prints. He chooses an unfamiliar place, spends 2-3 weeks of discovery, walking around, taking reference photos and sketching.
Once back in the studio, he spends a year painting. He will “cut out” colour shapes with the stylus, arranging them on different layers, creating a collage. The paintings end up as digital files; vector images which can be reduced or enlarged to any size. Therefore there is no scanning, the files are printed directly from the computer onto a mould-made paper, using a flat-bed UV inkjet printer. The resulting prints are then bound together into a beautiful artist's book, that takes the reader through his impression on a new city.
