A delight to note that George Smiley’s pastimes extend beyond spycatching to the book collector’s pastime of contracting ‘friendly bargains’ at No. 10 Curzon Street (see p. 24); one imagines that he might have preferred to spend more time amidst the books than Le Carré permits him here. Whether a booklover or an armchair spook, well worth a read, or ten.
