Author: The Earl of Rocksavage M.C.
About the Book:
Long out of print, Another Day’s March Nearer Home by the Earl of Rocksavage M.C. records a cavalry officer’s war from horses in Palestine to armoured cars in the Western Desert, and on through Tunisia, Sicily, Italy and North-West Europe. Written with dry humour and without self-importance, it gives a clear picture of small-unit reconnaissance work – the long desert drives, improvised leaguers, sharp brushes with enemy armour and the daily business of keeping cars, crews and spirits going. With a new Foreword by Algy Cluff.
About the Author:
Hugh Rocksavage (1919–1990) was the eldest son of George, later 5th Marquess of Cholmondeley, and Sybil Sassoon, and was brought up at Houghton Hall in Norfolk. Educated at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford, he joined 1st The Royal Dragoons on the outbreak of war, serving as a cavalry officer and then in armoured cars in Palestine and the Western Desert. He won the Military Cross at the Second Battle of El Alamein in 1942 for leading his troop behind enemy lines to destroy enemy supply columns, and later took part in the campaigns in Sicily, southern Italy, France, Belgium and Holland. After the war he transferred to the Grenadier Guards, then settled at Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire, where he farmed, hunted and served as a Deputy Lieutenant and, from 1968, as Hereditary Lord Great Chamberlain. He married Lavinia Leslie in 1947; they had four children.
