Heywood Hill’s Whodunit? is a brand-new subscription in our A Year in Books range. A whodunit mystery (pronounced ‘Who done it’) is a crime novel wherein the goal of the reader is to solve the puzzle of who committed the crime before the solution is revealed. A year of the best mystery writing, old and new, this subscription is one of our themed Classic & Contemporary range where each beautifully wrapped parcel of books contains one paperback classic of the genre, and one hardback contemporary novel.

From locked room crimes to inverted mystery, through golden age mysteries, Japanese mid-century writing up to modern pastiche, this subscription will sate even the most ardent puzzler. Over the course of the year, you or your lucky recipient will receive twelve top crime novels to sink your teeth into – and ultimately to wonder, whodunit? There will be six deliveries to your (or your recipient’s) door throughout 2026, each containing one classic paperback mystery and one hardback modern novel, a classic-to-be of the genre, as chosen by our expert bookselling team. 

The murder mystery is one of the most versatile genres in literature. With this in mind, we are proud to shine a light on six underappreciated classics of the golden age, many of which are only recently republished for the first time, while simultaneously celebrating the great writers of today who continue to push the genre forward. This pack includes an elegant gift card and letter detailing the subscription. We can also include a hand-written personal message on one of our illustrated postcards.
